Connect ChatGPT to your Windows PC

Bridgerator gives ChatGPT access to the files and terminal on your Windows computer. Ask in plain words — ChatGPT finds and edits files, organizes folders, runs commands and tells you what happened.

Also works in Claude, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and other AI apps.

  • Outbound connection only
  • No admin rights
  • 10,000 free calls a month

Why you need it

Your computer, in a plain conversation

Run your PC in plain words — from anywhere

No commands or paths to remember. From your phone or laptop, write “find the March contract”, “tidy my Downloads”, “what's in the error log”, “run the backup” — and it gets done on your own computer. No remote-access app, no open ports.

ChatGPT does the work for you

Normally ChatGPT only tells you what to do, and you copy commands and output back and forth. With Bridgerator it runs the steps on your PC, reads the result, fixes what went wrong and reports back. ChatGPT asks before actions that change things (unless you allow them for the whole chat); you can also turn on confirmations on the PC (a Windows notification) for risky actions such as deletions and system commands.

What it does

Your real computer, in an ordinary chat

Bridgerator is an MCP server for Windows. ChatGPT adds it as a custom plugin and gets access to the local files and terminal on your PC. Not a cloud sandbox — your computer with your programs.

Files

Read, create and precisely edit files; rename them and sort them into folders.

Search

Find files by name or content — instantly through Everything (if installed) or the Windows Search index, otherwise by a plain scan. Excluded folders never show up in the results.

Terminal

Run PowerShell and cmd commands, scripts and long processes, and read their output.

Processes

See what is running and what is loading the system, and stop processes when needed.

And more — no Office or extra programs needed

Word, Excel and PDF reports

New documents and spreadsheets without Office installed. An existing file is never overwritten — the new one gets “(2)” in its name.

Photos

Date and camera, smaller copies, renaming by the date taken. Originals stay unchanged, and the location (GPS) is read only when you ask.

Programs through winget

Find, install and update programs through the Windows Package Manager. Licenses are accepted only with your OK.

PC check in one command

Disks and their health, recent errors, startup programs, drivers, updates and memory — in plain words. Read only, changes nothing.

Screenshots and text from them

A screenshot of the screen or a window, and text recognition built into Windows. Every screenshot shows a notification on the PC; screenshots can be turned off. A locked screen can’t be captured.

Bridgerator doctor

bridgerator doctor checks the install and the link to ChatGPT and says in plain words what to do about each problem. ChatGPT can run it too.

AI ↔ AI

AI ↔ AI on your PC

ChatGPT can hand a task to Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI installed on your PC — with your own subscription, in one folder you choose, with time and parallel limits; every file change can be undone in one click. Another AI connected to Bridgerator can hand tasks to ChatGPT through your task queue. Bridgerator only checks that the agent is signed in, never reads its credentials.

ChatGPT → your coding agent

Say “Ask Claude Code to fix the tests in D:\Projects\app”. The agent works headless in that folder, and its answer and the list of changed files come back to ChatGPT. A long run goes on in the background — ChatGPT picks up the result later, and Telegram can tell you when it ends.

Another AI → ChatGPT

Claude, Codex or Cursor connected to Bridgerator add tasks to your queue (marked with who added them). Say “Work through my Bridgerator queue” in ChatGPT — the results go into notes or files the other AI reads back.

Your limits

On once an agent is found on the PC; each agent can be switched off on the Agents page of the Bridgerator window, or by asking ChatGPT. By default up to 30 minutes per task and 2 tasks at once. Before a run the folder is copied (by default when it is up to 200 MB), so “Undo” puts the agent’s whole run back at once.

Honestly about the limits

The agent runs with your Windows user’s rights, like the terminal. The folder is where it works, not a cage: only Codex’s own sandbox keeps its changes inside the folder, while Claude Code and Gemini CLI can reach files outside it, just as your terminal can. The agent gets no Bridgerator tools, so it can’t hand the task on to another AI.

How it works

Your PC connects out — nothing connects in

A small bridge runs on your computer. It opens an outbound connection to the Bridgerator server, and ChatGPT talks to that server as a connector.

No open ports

No public IP, port forwarding or router settings needed.

From anywhere

The connector follows your ChatGPT account. Ask from a laptop — your home PC does the work.

Several computers

Connect as many PCs as you need — all on one account.

Setup

Four steps, a few minutes

No admin rights needed. The bridge runs as your Windows user and starts by itself when you sign in.

  1. Add Bridgerator in ChatGPT

Settings → Security and login → turn on Developer mode. Then chatgpt.com/plugins → + → Add custom MCP server. URL below, sign-in via OAuth.

  2. Sign in to Bridgerator

ChatGPT opens the Bridgerator sign-in page — Google or e-mail. Your account is created on the spot — free.

  3. Run one command on the PC

Paste it into PowerShell. It installs Bridgerator as a signed Windows app — nothing else to install. No key to paste.

  4. Confirm in the browser

A tab opens with a code — check it matches PowerShell and press “Connect this computer”. Done.

3. A browser tab opens. Tell me to sign in (the "Continue with Google" button is fine) and click "Connect this computer".
4. In ChatGPT: open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode. Then open https://chatgpt.com/plugins, press +, choose Add custom MCP server. Name: Bridgerator. URL: https://mcp.bridgerator.recondeck.com/mcp. Sign in with the same Bridgerator account.
5. Ask me to test it by asking ChatGPT: "List the files on my Desktop."
If anything shows an error, ask me to copy the exact text to you and help me fix it. Never ask me for passwords or keys in this chat. Do not use any other download sources.
Security

Access only to what you allow

The rules live on your PC. ChatGPT changes these settings at once, with no question on the PC (you can turn on “Ask before the AI changes settings” and then lowering protection waits for your Apply); the file tools can't reach Bridgerator's own folders. Stop the bridge at any moment and access ends at once.

Security in detail →

  • Outbound connection only. No inbound ports are opened on the PC.
  • Folder limits. No list means every folder (only Bridgerator's own folders are always closed); with a list, only those folders. ChatGPT changes the folder list at once; if you turn on “Ask before the AI changes settings” (Settings → This PC), widening waits for your Apply on the PC.
  • Undo and Recycle Bin. Simple delete commands send files to the Recycle Bin, and files get a copy before ChatGPT changes them — “Undo AI changes” puts them back.
  • Stricter when you want. “Protect sensitive folders” (Startup, PowerShell profiles, .ssh, AppData…), read-only folders, confirmations on the PC, a pause on mass actions, access presets Read only / Files / Full. Off by default; switch them on in the Bridgerator window or by asking ChatGPT.
  • Nothing stored. File contents and command output pass through the server and are not saved.
  • TLS in transit. All traffic is encrypted in transit; ChatGPT signs in via OAuth 2.1 with PKCE.
  • The terminal, honestly. Commands run with your user's rights and aren't limited by folders. Don't need it? Turn it off.

Why Bridgerator

Fair price

Free — 10,000 tool calls a month. Pro — $20 $10 a month with unlimited calls. Your account page shows the calls used this month and whether they will last to the end of it.

One command

One line in PowerShell installs a signed Windows app (x64 and ARM64). Nothing else to install, no admin rights. After that the bridge starts by itself when you sign in to Windows.

You approve risky actions

You approve risky actions on your PC — turn on a confirmation (a Windows notification) before deletions or system commands run.

Protection you choose

Nothing is restricted by default, as with similar tools; only Bridgerator itself is always closed. When you want, turn on “Protect sensitive folders”, read-only folders or a folder list.

No ads in the chat

Plan notices come as Windows notifications — never as ads inside ChatGPT.

Open and checkable

The bridge on your PC is open source (npm package); the Windows app is built from it and signed by SoftInnovaticsPlus LLC. Nothing you send is stored.

Work from several chats at once

Several ChatGPT chats can work on the same PC in parallel and share one task queue without taking the same task twice. The PC stays responsive: at most 8 actions run at a time, extra ones wait, and an action that times out waiting is not counted.

Task queue

A checklist ChatGPT works through item by item, marking each result. Kept only on this PC.

Tray app

A status icon and one-click pause, plus a window with the task queue, recent actions, safety, notifications and settings.

Undo AI changes

A file gets a copy before ChatGPT changes it, and simple deletes go to the Recycle Bin. One button and the files are back as they were.

Recipes on a schedule

Ready-made jobs: backup, cleaning up downloads, a disk report and more. ChatGPT puts them into Task Scheduler — then they run without the AI and spend no calls. All recipes

Telegram notifications

The @BridgeratorBot bot tells you when the task queue is done, a task or a scheduled job failed, a task handed to another AI ended, or a PC has been offline for over 30 minutes. Only the PC name, counts and statuses — never task text or files. Details

One question for a big job

With confirmations on, a big job — say, moving 214 files — asks once on the PC: Allow all, Review… (tick the items in the window) or Deny, instead of a notification per file.

Sleep doesn’t cut tasks off

While ChatGPT works or the task queue has work, the PC doesn’t go to sleep (on mains power only; the screen can still turn off). Can be turned off.

Personal access key

Apps that can’t sign in by themselves (LM Studio, JetBrains AI Assistant, Copilot Studio, scripts) connect with a personal access key from your account page. It doesn’t expire; revoke or regenerate it in one click. Keep it like a password. Details

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from uploading files?

You don't attach anything: the assistant finds, reads and edits files in place, runs commands and sees the results. That helps with folders of thousands of files, code projects and multi-step tasks.

Will ChatGPT get access to my whole computer?

With no folder list (the default on a fresh install), ChatGPT may work in every folder: nothing is restricted by default, as with similar tools. Only Bridgerator itself is always closed — its settings folders and program files — because otherwise the AI could quietly switch off any protection. With a list, ChatGPT works only in those folders. Changes ChatGPT makes to the folder list apply at once; with “Ask before the AI changes settings” (Settings → This PC, off by default) on, widening it (adding a folder to the list, or going back to all folders) waits for Apply on the PC. A delete ChatGPT runs with a simple command goes to the Recycle Bin, and a file gets a copy before ChatGPT changes, moves or deletes it, so “Undo AI changes” can put it back. Want it stricter? Turn on “Protect sensitive folders” (Startup, PowerShell profiles, .ssh, .aws and other login folders, AppData), read-only folders, confirmations on the PC, the pause on mass deletes or moves, or the access preset Read only / Files / Full. Switch any of it in the Bridgerator window or ask ChatGPT; switching protection off at ChatGPT’s request applies at once, unless you turned on “Ask before the AI changes settings” — then it waits for Apply on the PC. The terminal runs with your Windows user's rights and is not limited by folders — if that is too much, turn it off. Settings are in %APPDATA%\Bridgerator\config.json.

What data do you store?

Your account, your list of computers and the call counter, plus the Telegram chat id and language if you connect Telegram notifications. File contents and command output are not saved. Details in the privacy policy.

What counts as a tool call?

One action on your PC: read a file, run a command, a search step. A typical task takes from a few to a few dozen calls. Chat messages don't count.

Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan?

Adding your own MCP server needs Developer mode in ChatGPT — Settings → Security and login. Whether you have it depends on your ChatGPT plan. Bridgerator also works in other AI apps: Claude, Codex, Cursor, VS Code.

Does the PC have to be on?

Yes: the PC is on, you are signed in to Windows and the bridge is running (it starts by itself). ChatGPT can't see a computer that is off.

What if Do Not Disturb hides a confirmation?

If Do Not Disturb (Focus) hides the notification, the request is denied automatically after 2 minutes. Nothing runs. Confirmations are off by default; turn them on with bridgerator.cmd confirm on.

How do I see that Bridgerator is running, and pause it?

The tray icon shows the state: green — online, grey — offline, yellow — paused. Its menu has Open Bridgerator…, Open account, Pause / Resume and Quit. Pause means ChatGPT can't use the PC until you click Resume. Quit stops the bridge until the next time you sign in to Windows.

How do I disconnect?

Run bridgerator.cmd uninstall in PowerShell on the PC — access ends at once, and this computer's key is removed on the server too (to remove the program completely: bridgerator.cmd uninstall --all). To check, look at your account page: the computer should be gone. Remove the connector in ChatGPT settings and the account on your account page.

Connect your computer to ChatGPT

Sign up, run one PowerShell command and add the connector in ChatGPT — a few minutes.
