Done. Now connect ChatGPT
The bridge is running in the background on this computer and will start by itself every time you sign in to Windows. You can close the PowerShell window. If Bridgerator is already added in ChatGPT, open a new chat and ask for something on your PC. If not, you do it once.
Connect ChatGPT
Already added Bridgerator in ChatGPT (for this or another PC)? Then there is nothing to do — this computer shows up by itself.
Turn on Developer mode
In ChatGPT: Settings → Security and login, turn on Developer mode.
Add Bridgerator
Open chatgpt.com/plugins, press + → Add custom MCP server. Name: Bridgerator, the URL below, sign-in: OAuth.
ChatGPT opens the Bridgerator sign-in page — sign in with Google (or e-mail and password), using the same account you confirmed this computer with.
Turn it on in a chat
In a new chat pick Bridgerator from the tools list and ask for something to be done on your PC.
Set it up with ChatGPT
After installing, open ChatGPT and say
Set up Bridgerator
. ChatGPT shows how Bridgerator is set up and explains what you can change. There is no questionnaire: the defaults stay as they are, and ChatGPT limits access (folders, read-only folders, the Read only / Files access level, confirmations) only when you explicitly ask it to. Changes it makes apply at once with no question on the PC; if you turn on “Ask before the AI changes settings” (Settings → This PC, off by default), changes that lower protection wait for Apply on the PC. Bridgerator's own folders, blockedCommandsand telemetry can't be changed this way.
Task queue. You can keep a checklist of tasks for ChatGPT in the Bridgerator window. In ChatGPT, say work through my Bridgerator queue
: it takes the next item, does it, marks it done or failed with a note, and continues. ChatGPT can add steps to the queue when planning. ChatGPT can't be messaged from the PC; it reads the queue when you ask it to. ChatGPT can add up to 100 tasks at once, and several chats share one queue. A task left “in progress” for 30 minutes without an update is picked up by the next chat (Continue my Bridgerator queue
). Clearing every task needs your OK on the PC; the window has “Clear…” (done / failed and skipped / all) with Undo.
Talk to ChatGPT:
Set up Bridgerator
— shows the current setup and what can be changedAdd these tasks to my Bridgerator queue: …
— adds tasks to the queueWork through my Bridgerator queue
— does the tasks one by oneContinue my Bridgerator queue
— picks up where another chat stoppedShow my Bridgerator settings
— shows the current settings; ask to change themTurn on confirmations for deletions
— asks on the PC before files are deleted
ChatGPT can manage the same settings as the Bridgerator window: say Show my Bridgerator settings
or ask it to change them. Changes apply at once, with no question on the PC. If you turn on “Ask before the AI changes settings” (Settings → This PC, off by default), changes that lower protection (turning it off, more folders, removing read-only folders, autostart, usage stats, local history) wait for Apply on the PC. Blocked commands and Bridgerator's own folders can't be changed this way.

Let an AI install it for you
Copy and paste this into any AI chat — ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot. It walks you through each step.
Help me install Bridgerator on this Windows PC. Bridgerator connects ChatGPT to my computer. Official site: https://bridgerator.recondeck.com Guide me one step at a time, wait for my reply after each step, and use simple words — I'm not technical. 1. Tell me how to open Windows PowerShell (Start menu → type "PowerShell" → open it). No administrator rights are needed. 2. Tell me to paste exactly this command and press Enter: irm https://bridgerator.recondeck.com/install.ps1 | iex (If you can run commands on this PC yourself, run it for me instead and show me the output.) 3. A browser tab opens. Tell me to sign in (the "Continue with Google" button is fine) and click "Connect this computer". 4. In ChatGPT: open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode. Then open https://chatgpt.com/plugins, press +, choose Add custom MCP server. Name: Bridgerator. URL: https://mcp.bridgerator.recondeck.com/mcp. Sign in with the same Bridgerator account. 5. Ask me to test it by asking ChatGPT: "List the files on my Desktop." If anything shows an error, ask me to copy the exact text to you and help me fix it. Never ask me for passwords or keys in this chat. Do not use any other download sources.
Try your first requests
Paste any of them into ChatGPT. ChatGPT asks you to confirm actions that change things; on the PC you can also turn on confirmations for risky actions (bridgerator.cmd confirm on).
Which folders can you access on my computer? Show the bridge's current settings.
Sort my Downloads folder by file type. Show me the plan first and don't delete anything.
Find files in Documents changed in the last week and briefly describe each one.
How much free space is on my drives and which folders take up the most?
Which folders the assistant can see
With no folder list (the default on a fresh install), ChatGPT may work in every folder: nothing is restricted by default, as with similar tools. Only Bridgerator itself is always closed — its settings folders and program files — because otherwise the AI could quietly switch off any protection. With a list, ChatGPT works only in those folders. Changes ChatGPT makes to the folder list apply at once; with “Ask before the AI changes settings” (Settings → This PC, off by default) on, widening it (adding a folder to the list, or going back to all folders) waits for Apply on the PC. A delete ChatGPT runs with a simple command goes to the Recycle Bin, and a file gets a copy before ChatGPT changes, moves or deletes it, so “Undo AI changes” can put it back. Want it stricter? Turn on “Protect sensitive folders” (Startup, PowerShell profiles, .ssh, .aws and other login folders, AppData), read-only folders, confirmations on the PC, the pause on mass deletes or moves, or the access preset Read only / Files / Full. Switch any of it in the Bridgerator window or ask ChatGPT; switching protection off at ChatGPT’s request applies at once, unless you turned on “Ask before the AI changes settings” — then it waits for Apply on the PC. The rules live in this file:
%APPDATA%\Bridgerator\config.jsonallowedDirectories
Folders the assistant may work in. No list means every folder except Bridgerator's own.
deniedDirectories
Folders closed even inside allowed ones. Bridgerator's own folders are always closed; "protectSensitive": true (“Protect sensitive folders”) adds AppData, .ssh, Startup and other sensitive folders. Read-only folders go in readOnlyDirectories (bridgerator.cmd read-only add <folder>).
disabledTools
Tools the assistant will not see. ["start_process", "interact_with_process", "kill_process"] turns the terminal off completely.
blockedCommands
A safety net, not a security boundary: a filter on the first word of a command. Without this key a built-in list applies: format, diskpart, reg, net and others.
Edits to the file apply at once — the Bridgerator window and ChatGPT see them without a restart. Changes that weaken protection (more folders, fewer read-only folders, protection turned off) take effect only after you click Apply in the notification on the PC.
You can also set folders at install time: add -Allow 'D:\ to the install command.
The terminal is not limited by folders: commands run with your Windows user's rights. If you need strict limits, turn the terminal off with disabledTools.
Check that the bridge is running
Run in PowerShell:
bridgerator.cmd status
Its first line is “Bridgerator is running — online as <PC>”, “Bridgerator is not running” or “Bridgerator: key rejected — run the install command again”, then the paths of the settings and the log. Add --json to print the settings (key masked); bridgerator.cmd doctor checks everything. Full log: %APPDATA%\.
How to uninstall
One command in PowerShell: it stops the bridge (ChatGPT loses access to this PC at once), removes autostart and deletes the program, its settings and the key:
bridgerator.cmd uninstall --all
This computer's key is removed on the server too. To check, look at your account page and remove the computer if it is still listed; remove the connector in ChatGPT settings.
